The Lakshmi Chalisa praises Goddess Mahalakshmi — the divine consort of Vishnu, the source of all wealth, abundance, beauty, and grace. She is worshipped on Fridays, during Diwali, and during the Vaibhav Lakshmi Vrat for the blessings of prosperity in all its eight forms.


दोहा (Doha — Opening Verse)

मातु लक्ष्मी करि कृपा, करो हृदय में वास ।

मनोकामना सिद्ध कर, पुरवहु मेरी आस ॥

Maatu Lakshmi Kari Kripa, Karo Hriday Mein Vaas,

Manokaamanaa Siddh Kar, Puravahu Meri Aas.

O Mother Lakshmi, show your grace, make your abode in my heart; fulfill my heart's desires and complete all my hopes.


चौपाई (Chaupai — The 40 Verses)

1.

सिंधु सुता मैं सुमिरौं तोहीं ।

ज्ञान बुद्धि विद्या दो मोहीं ॥

Sindhu Sutaa Main Sumiron Toheen, Gyaan Buddhi Vidyaa Do Moheen.

O daughter of the ocean, I remember you; grant me knowledge, intelligence, and learning.

2.

तुम समान नहिं कोई उपकारी ।

तोहिं सेवत जग भय हारी ॥

Tum Samaan Nahin Koi Upkaari, Tohin Sevat Jag Bhay Haari.

There is none as beneficent as you; one who serves you becomes free from all worldly fears.

3.

बाल रूप धरि तुम अतिशोभा ।

खेलत हो जग मन को लोभा ॥

Baal Roop Dhari Tum Atishobha, Khelat Ho Jag Man Ko Lobha.

Taking the form of a child, you are most beautiful; the world's mind is drawn to you as you play.

4.

विष्णु पत्नी महालक्ष्मी माता ।

दीन जन की बाधा हर्ता ॥

Vishnu Patni Mahalakshmi Maata, Deen Jan Ki Baadha Harta.

Consort of Vishnu, Mother Mahalakshmi — remover of the obstacles of the meek.

5.

रमा कमला पद्मा जग जानी ।

तुमको सब देव मुनि बखानी ॥

Ramaa Kamalaa Padmaa Jag Jaani, Tumko Sab Dev Muni Bakhaani.

Known as Rama, Kamala, and Padma by the world — all gods and sages praise you.

6.

चतुर्भुज रूप धारण कीन्हे ।

ध्यान धरत भव संकट छीने ॥

Chaturbhuj Roop Dhaaran Keenhe, Dhyaan Dharat Bhav Sankat Chheene.

Assuming the four-armed form — meditating on you removes all worldly troubles.

श्वेत वर्ण शुभ वस्त्र धारिणी ।

पद्मासन श्वेत कमल विहारिणी ॥

Shvet Varn Shubh Vastr Dhaarini, Padmaasan Shvet Kamal Vihaarini.

Fair-complexioned, wearing auspicious white garments, seated on a white lotus.

8.

गज हस्त जल धार झुकाये ।

शत्रु पराजित दूर भगाये ॥

Gaj Hast Jal Dhaar Jhukaaye, Shatru Paraajit Door Bhagaaye.

Elephants pour streams of water over you; enemies are defeated and driven far away.

9.

चार हाथ शोभित अति सुन्दर ।

वर अभय कमल दो में मनोहर ॥

Chaar Haath Shobhit Ati Sundar, Var Abhay Kamal Do Mein Manohar.

Four hands adorn you most beautifully; in two hands are boon and fearlessness; in two, enchanting lotuses.

10.

दाएँ हाथ से वर देती हो ।

बाएँ से अभय मुद्रा लेती हो ॥

Daayen Haath Se Var Deti Ho, Baayen Se Abhay Mudra Leti Ho.

With your right hand you grant boons; with your left you hold the gesture of fearlessness.

11.

स्वर्ण वर्ण तुम शोभित होती ।

जग में मातृ धर्म की ज्योती ॥

Svarn Varn Tum Shobhit Hoti, Jag Mein Maatri Dharm Ki Jyoti.

You shine with a golden complexion; you are the light of the maternal principle in the world.

12.

आश्विन शुक्ल अष्टमी के दिन ।

पूजन से सफल होत जीवन ॥

Aashwin Shukla Ashtami Ke Din, Poojan Se Safal Hot Jeevan.

On Ashwina Shukla Ashtami (the eighth bright lunar day in Ashwin month), worshipping you makes life successful.

13.

दिवाली के दिन तुम्हरी पूजा ।

इस दिन से पर्व नहीं दूजा ॥

Diwali Ke Din Tumhari Poojaa, Is Din Se Parv Nahin Dooja.

Your puja on Diwali day — there is no festival greater than this day.

14.

घर में लक्ष्मी को जो बुलाये ।

शुक्रवार को व्रत जो रहाये ॥

Ghar Mein Lakshmi Ko Jo Bulaaye, Shukravar Ko Vrat Jo Rahaaye.

Whoever wishes to invite Lakshmi into the home — observe the Friday fast.

15.

वाहन उलूक शोभित तुम्हारा ।

मतलब गूढ़ है इसका सारा ॥

Vaahan Ulook Shobhit Tumhaaraa, Matalab Goodh Hai Iska Saaraa.

The owl (ulook) is your beautiful vehicle; its meaning is profound indeed.

16.

रात्रि में विचरण को जो आवे ।

भक्तों के भाग्य खोल जावे ॥

Raatri Mein Vicharan Ko Jo Aave, Bhakton Ke Bhagya Khol Jaave.

The one who moves at night (the owl) opens the destiny of devotees.

17.

अष्ट रूप माँ तुम्हारे जाने ।

भक्त जन सब मन से पहचाने ॥

Asht Roop Maa Tumhaare Jaane, Bhakt Jan Sab Man Se Pahchaane.

Your eight forms, O Mother, are known to all — devotees recognize them all in their hearts.

18.

आदिलक्ष्मी धनलक्ष्मी गावें ।

धान्यलक्ष्मी गज महिमा पावें ॥

Aadilakshmi Dhanalakshmi Gaaven, Dhaanyalakshmi Gaj Mahimaa Paaven.

We sing of Adi Lakshmi and Dhana Lakshmi; Dhanya Lakshmi and Gaja Lakshmi are glorified.

19.

संतानलक्ष्मी वीरलक्ष्मी जाना ।

विजयलक्ष्मी विद्यालक्ष्मी माना ॥

Sanataanlakshmi Veeralakshmi Jaanaa, Vijayalakshmi Vidyaalakshmi Maanaa.

Santana Lakshmi and Veera Lakshmi are known; Vijaya Lakshmi and Vidya Lakshmi are revered.

20.

इन आठों का पूजन करिये ।

जीवन में सब मंगल भरिये ॥

In Aathon Ka Poojan Kariye, Jeevan Mein Sab Mangal Bhariye.

Worship all these eight forms; fill your life with all auspiciousness.

21.

समुद्र मंथन में तुम प्रकटीं ।

अमृत संग तुम सबके समझीं ॥

Samudra Manthan Mein Tum Prakatin, Amrit Sang Tum Sabke Samjhin.

You emerged during the churning of the ocean, understood by all as the companion of amrita (nectar of immortality).

22.

विष्णु ने तुमको वरण किया ।

सृष्टि के पालन का काम दिया ॥

Vishnu Ne Tumko Varan Kiyaa, Srishti Ke Paalan Ka Kaam Diyaa.

Vishnu chose you; the task of sustaining creation was given to you.

23.

दोनों मिलकर सृष्टि चलाते ।

योग माया से जीव पलाते ॥

Donon Milkar Srishti Chalaate, Yog Maaya Se Jeev Palaate.

Together you two run creation; through the yoga of Maya all beings are nourished.

24.

सीता राधा रूप तुम धारो ।

अवतार लेकर भव जग तारो ॥

Seetaa Raadhaa Roop Tum Dhaaro, Avataaar Lekar Bhav Jag Taaro.

You take forms as Sita and Radha; taking avatars you carry the worldly beings across.

25.

तुम बिन जगत नीरस जाने ।

रस माधुर्य तुमसे पहचाने ॥

Tum Bin Jagat Neeras Jaane, Ras Maadhury Tumse Pahchaane.

Without you the world is known to be without taste; all sweetness and flavor is known through you.

26.

महालक्ष्मी की जो स्तुति गावें ।

दरिद्रता के बाधा हर पावें ॥

Mahalakshmi Ki Jo Stuti Gaaven, Daridrataa Ke Baadha Har Paaven.

Whoever sings the praises of Mahalakshmi — all the obstacles of poverty are removed.

27.

घर में रहो माँ सदा सुहागन ।

संतान दो माँ दूर करो दागन ॥

Ghar Mein Raho Maa Sadaa Suhaagan, Santaan Do Maa Door Karo Daagan.

Remain in our home always, O auspicious Mother; grant children, O Mother, and remove all blemishes.

28.

सूखी माँ की कृपा जब होती ।

सब संपत्ति में खुशी भरी होती ॥

Sookhi Maa Ki Kripaa Jab Hoti, Sab Sampatti Mein Khushi Bhari Hoti.

When the grace of the auspicious Mother comes, all wealth is filled with joy.

29.

जो मन से तुमको जो ध्यावे ।

धन धान्य सुख शांति वह पावे ॥

Jo Man Se Tumko Jo Dhyaave, Dhan Dhaany Sukh Shaanti Vah Paave.

Whoever meditates on you with a sincere heart receives wealth, grain, happiness, and peace.

30.

कनकधारा स्तोत्र तुम्हारा ।

शंकराचार्य गाये उजियारा ॥

Kanakadhaaraa Stotr Tumhaaraa, Shankaraachaarya Gaaye Ujiyaaraa.

The Kanakadhara Stotra is your hymn — Shankaracharya sang it to illuminate the world.

31.

निर्धन को धन तुमने दिया ।

शंकर भक्त का मान रखा किया ॥

Nirdhan Ko Dhan Tumne Diyaa, Shankar Bhakt Ka Maan Rakhaa Kiyaa.

You gave wealth to the poor one; you upheld the honor of Shankara's devotee.

32.

जहाँ तुम हो वहाँ हो शुभ ही ।

कुदृष्टि नहिं टिकती कभी ही ॥

Jahaan Tum Ho Vahaan Ho Shubh Hi, Kudrishti Nahin Tikti Kabhi Hi.

Wherever you are there is only auspiciousness; the evil eye never takes hold there.

33.

अलक्ष्मी को दूर भगाना ।

घर में सुख समृद्धि लाना ॥

Alakshmee Ko Door Bhagaanaa, Ghar Mein Sukh Samriddhi Laanaa.

Drive away Alakshmí (inauspiciousness) and bring happiness and prosperity into the home.

34.

श्रीयंत्र की विधि से पूजन ।

संपदा देती हो तुम प्रसन्न ॥

Shreeyjantr Ki Vidhi Se Poojan, Sampadaa Deti Ho Tum Prasann.

Worship with the Shri Yantra method; you are pleased and bestow wealth.

35.

कमलगट्टा की माला जपिये ।

श्री यंत्र पर ध्यान धरिपिये ॥

Kamalgattaa Ki Maala Japiye, Shri Yantr Par Dhyaan Dharipiye.

Recite on a rosary of lotus seeds; place your meditation on the Shri Yantra.

36.

शुक्रवार को उपवास करिये ।

माँ का प्रसाद मन से ग्रहिये ॥

Shukravar Ko Upvaas Kariye, Maa Ka Prasaad Man Se Grahiye.

Observe the Friday fast; receive Mother's prasad with a devoted heart.

37.

पीला वस्त्र चढ़ावन होता ।

पीत फूल अर्पण नित होता ॥

Peela Vastr Chadhaavan Hotaa, Peet Phool Arpanam Nit Hotaa.

Yellow garments are offered; yellow flowers are presented daily.

38.

घी का दीप जलाये जो कोई ।

माँ की कृपा मिले उसको सोई ॥

Ghee Ka Deep Jalaaye Jo Koee, Maa Ki Kripaa Mile Usko Soee.

Whoever lights a ghee lamp — to that one comes Mother's grace.

39.

लक्ष्मी चालीसा नित जो पढ़े ।

जीवन में मंगल सब मिल बड़े ॥

Lakshmi Chaalisaa Nit Jo Padhe, Jeevan Mein Mangal Sab Mil Bade.

Whoever reads the Lakshmi Chalisa daily — all auspiciousness gathers and grows in life.

40.

माँ लक्ष्मी की कृपा जो पावे ।

सोई मनोकामना पूर्ण कर जावे ॥

Maa Lakshmi Ki Kripaa Jo Paave, Soee Manokaamanaa Poorn Kar Jaave.

Whoever receives the grace of Mother Lakshmi — all the heart's desires are fulfilled.


दोहा (Doha — Closing Verse)

सब देवों में श्रेष्ठ तुम, तीनों लोक की माय ।

लक्ष्मी चालीसा पढ़त, मनवांछित फल पाय ॥

Sab Devon Mein Shreshtha Tum, Teenon Lok Ki Maay,

Lakshmi Chaalisaa Padhat, Manvaanchhat Phal Paay.

You are supreme among all gods, the Mother of all three worlds. Reading the Lakshmi Chalisa, the heart's desired fruits are obtained.
