Om Jai Jagdish Hare Aarti

Complete Om Jai Jagdish Hare Aarti with lyrics in Hindi and English translation

Om Jai Jagdish Hare Aarti

The most widely sung aarti in Hindu homes, Om Jai Jagdish Hare was composed by Pandit Shradha Ram Phillouri in 1870. It is sung in nearly every Hindu puja across North India and the diaspora. It is addressed to Lord Vishnu — the preserver of the universe — and his many avatars.

Hindi (Devanagari)

English Translation (Meaning)

Om, victory to the Lord of the Universe! O Lord, victory to you!

In an instant you remove all difficulties of your devotees.

Whoever meditates on you receives the fruit; the sorrow of the mind is destroyed,

Happiness and prosperity come to the home, the suffering of the body is ended.

You are my mother and father; to whose shelter shall I go?

Without you there is no other, on whom I can place my hope.

You are the complete Supreme Soul, you are the inner witness,

You are the transcendent Brahman, the Supreme Lord, the Master of all.

You are the ocean of compassion, you are the sustainer,

I am foolish, wicked, and lustful — show me grace, O Provider.

You are the one imperceptible, the Lord of the life-breath of all,

How shall I, of low understanding, meet you, O Compassionate One?

Friend of the helpless, remover of sorrow — you are my Lord,

Raise your hands and bless me; I am fallen at your door.

Remove the vices and sense-addictions, take away my sins, O Lord,

Increase my faith and devotion, and the service of the holy ones.

Body, mind, and wealth — everything is yours, O Master,

I offer to you what is already yours — what then is mine?

Significance

This aarti transcends sectarian divisions and is sung by Vaishnavas, Shaivites, and followers of all traditions. Lord Vishnu's ten principal avatars (Dashavatara) — from Matsya (fish) through Kalki — represent the divine's recurring intervention to restore dharma. The aarti reminds devotees that everything belongs to God and surrender (sharanagati) is the highest path.

Best time: Daily morning and evening puja, Ekadashi (11th lunar day), Thursdays, and Satyanarayan Katha.
