The Shiva Aarti is among the most powerful devotional hymns in Hindu tradition. Lord Shiva — the Destroyer in the Trimurti (Brahma-Vishnu-Mahesh), the Supreme Being in Shaivism — is worshipped in this aarti in his many aspects: as the cosmic dancer Nataraja, as the silent yogi on Mount Kailash, as the compassionate Bholenath who grants boons readily, and as the destroyer of evil.

Om, victory to Shiva, the embodiment of Om! Victory to Shiva, the embodiment of Om!
Brahma, Vishnu, and Eternal Shiva — these three are contained in the one who holds his half-body (Ardhanarishvara).
He who is one-faced, four-faced, and five-faced reigns supreme,
The swan-seated (Brahma), eagle-seated (Vishnu), and bull-vehicled (Shiva) are adorned together.
With two arms, with four arms, with ten arms — all are magnificently beautiful,
Beholding the three-natured form, the people of all three worlds are enchanted.
Wearing a rosary of rudraksha beads, garland of forest flowers, garland of skulls,
Adorned with sandalwood and musk, bearing the crescent moon on his forehead.
Clad in white, yellow, and tiger-skin garments,
Accompanied by Sanaka and other sages, Garuda and other devotees, and ghosts and spirits.
Holding a water-pot, discus, and trident in his hands,
Giver of happiness, remover of sorrow, sustainer of the universe.
Brahma, Vishnu, and Sadashiva are known by the unknowing as separate,
But within the syllable of Pranava (Om), these three are one.
Whoever sings the aarti of the three-natured Shiva,
Says Shivananda Swami — shall receive the desired fruit of the heart.
Lord Shiva's iconography is deeply symbolic. The third eye represents transcendent wisdom; the crescent moon symbolizes the mind and the cycle of time; the serpent Vasuki coiled at the neck represents the kundalini energy; the Ganga flowing from his matted hair represents the river of consciousness; the trident (trishul) represents the three aspects — creation, preservation, and destruction.
Best time to sing: Monday mornings (Somvar), during Mahashivaratri, and during the month of Shravan (July–August).
Offerings: Bilva (bel) leaves (most sacred to Shiva), water, milk, white flowers, bhasma (sacred ash), dhatura, and blue lotuses. Shiva is said to be pleased most easily among all deities (hence called Bholenath — the innocent one).
