Complete Jai Ambe Gauri Aarti with lyrics in Hindi and English translation

Jai Ambe Gauri Aarti

Goddess Durga (Amba, Ambe, Gauri) is the supreme warrior goddess, the divine feminine power (Shakti) who slew the demon Mahishasura. She is invoked during Navratri — the nine nights of the goddess — and is worshipped in her nine forms (Navadurga). This aarti is one of the most popular devotional songs of Navratri celebrations across India.

Hindi (Devanagari)

English Translation (Meaning)

Victory to Ambe (Durga), the fair one! Victory to Shyama (the dark-complexioned) Gauri!

Hari (Vishnu), Brahma, and Shiva meditate on you day and night.

The parting of your hair is adorned with sindoor; your forehead bears a mark of musk,

Your two eyes are brilliant; your moon-like face is beautiful.

Your form is like gold; you are adorned in red garments,

A garland of red flowers hangs at your throat, adorning your neck.

You ride a lion magnificently, bearing a sword and a skull-cup,

Gods, men, and sages all serve you; you remove their sorrows.

Ear-rings adorn your ears, a pearl at the tip of your nose,

Your radiance equals tens of millions of suns and moons.

You destroyed Shumbha and Nishumbha; you slew Mahishasura,

With smoke-tinted eyes, you are ever intoxicated with divine power.

You annihilated Chanda and Munda; you destroyed the demon Raktabija,

You killed Madhu and Kaitabha, freeing the gods from fear.

You are Brahmani, Rudrani, and Kamala (Lakshmi),

Praised in the Agamas and Vedas, you are the chief queen of Shiva.

The sixty-four yoginis perform auspicious dances in your honor,

With the beat of tablas and mridanga drums, and the playing of the sweet damaru.

You alone are the mother of the world; you alone are its sustainer,

You remove the sorrows of devotees and create happiness and prosperity.

Your four beautiful arms hold the boon-granting gesture,

Men and women who serve you receive the desired fruits of their hearts.

A golden plate is set before you with agaru incense and camphor lamps,

Hari performs the flower-offering while Vedic hymns are sung.

Whoever sings the aarti of Shri Ambe,

Says Shivananda Swami — shall attain happiness and prosperity.

Significance

Durga's nine forms (Navadurga) — Shailputri, Brahmacharini, Chandraghanta, Kushmanda, Skandamata, Katyayani, Kalaratri, Mahagauri, and Siddhidatri — are each worshipped on successive nights of Navratri. The aarti captures her fierce (Ugra) and benevolent (Saumya) aspects simultaneously.

Best time: Navratri (twice yearly — Chaitra and Ashwin), Tuesdays, and Fridays. Also during any Durga Saptashati (Chandi Path) recitation.
