What Is a Yoga?
A Yoga (literally "union") is a specific planetary combination in the birth chart that creates a concentrated result — far stronger than any single planet alone. Hundreds of yogas exist in classical texts, each with precise formation rules and predicted outcomes.
The 3 Types of Yoga
Raj Yogas (Royal) — Formed by lords of Kendra (1,4,7,10) and Trikona (1,5,9) houses conjunct or exchanging. Bestow authority, success, fame, and power.
Dhana Yogas (Wealth) — Formed by lords of 2nd, 11th, 5th, 9th, and 1st houses in combination. Indicate material prosperity and financial abundance.
Arishta Yogas (Challenging) — Formed by afflicted lords of 6th, 8th, 12th houses. Indicate areas of life requiring extra effort or indicating karmic challenges to overcome.
The 5 Pancha Mahapurusha Yogas
Ruchaka (Mars) — Mars in own sign or exalted in a Kendra → warrior energy, leadership, real estate success
Bhadra (Mercury) — Mercury in own/exalted Kendra → exceptional intellect, business brilliance, communication mastery
Hamsa (Jupiter) — Jupiter in own/exalted Kendra → divine wisdom, spiritual authority, great fortune
Malavya (Venus) — Venus in own/exalted Kendra → beauty, luxury, artistic fame, romantic life
Sasa (Saturn) — Saturn in own/exalted Kendra → discipline, political power, lasting legacy
Most Celebrated Yogas
Gaja Kesari — Jupiter in Kendra from Moon → fame, wisdom, respected like an elephant-lion. Very common but powerful.
Budha Aditya — Sun + Mercury conjunct → exceptional intelligence, communication gifts, intellectual recognition
Adhi Yoga — Benefics in 6th, 7th, 8th from Moon → royalty-like comforts, fame, and protection from enemies
Why Strength Matters
Having a yoga on paper is not enough. The yoga must be strong — its forming planets must have good Shadbala (six-fold strength), be in friendly signs, and be unafflicted by malefics. A weak yoga gives diluted results; a strong yoga can be life-defining.
