Mangal Dosha (also called Kuja Dosha or Manglik Dosha) occurs when Mars (Mangal) is placed in the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th, or 12th house of the birth chart, counted from the Lagna (ascendant), Moon, or Venus.
Mars is a planet of aggression, energy, and intensity. When placed in houses related to marriage, family, and longevity, it can inject that intensity into those life areas — creating friction, dominance issues, or conflicts in relationships.
The important nuance: Not all Mangal Dosha is equal. The house, sign, aspect, and cancellation conditions dramatically change the picture. A jyotishi who tells you "you have Mangal Dosha, do this puja" without checking cancellations is oversimplifying.

Vedic astrology recognizes several conditions under which the effects of Mangal Dosha are reduced or nullified:
Should Mangalik Marry Only Mangalik?
This is the most common piece of advice — and it is partially correct. When both partners have Mangal Dosha, the intensity "balances out" because both have Mars energy in their marital houses.
However, modern jyotishis emphasize that overall chart compatibility (Ashtakoot Milan) matters far more than any single dosha. A couple with strong Guna compatibility and mutual Mangal Dosha is better matched than a couple with Dosha imbalance and poor Guna scores.
Bottom line: Check full Kundali compatibility, not just Mangal Dosha in isolation.
